MP4 format
Standard
formats for MPEG-4 is named by MP4. This sometimes causes people to get
confused and think of it as audio formats like MP3. MP3 is actually
associated with MPEG-1. MP3 audio is part of the original MPEG standard.
MPEG-4
is actually a type of so-called "container format". This format means
combining several different content into a single file. Usually the
content is audio coupled with video, but sometimes content such as still
images are also put in an MP4 file.
Video and audio
content are combined in MP4 can consist of a variety of formats. For the
video format used eg DivX, XviD, ffmpeg, H.264 ( MPEG-4 AVC ). AAC
format and MP3 audio examples, while for still images we can use the
JPEG and PNG. All the content formats including MPEG-4 standard
In
addition to that covered in the standard format MPEG-4, MP4 files can
also contain non-standard formats, such as Ogg Vorbis and AMR for audio
and Ogg Theora for video.
Because of the diversity of
this family MP4, if you get a MP4 file extension from another person (eg
from the Internet) the file can not be viewed on your cell phone, even
though the camera phone itself produce MP4 file format.
Although
the MP4 is a standard extension used for MPEG-4 files, sometimes we
find other file extensions. Examples of these non-standard extensions
such as M4V and M4A. Each is a video format and audio format which Apple
introduced separately. Music sold through Apple's online iTunes service
using M4P format, which is an additional protection to MP4 with DRM
(Digital Rights Management)
3GP format
Besides
MP4 file format we also often find files with 3GP 3GPP or on the phone.
Actually both these formats are still concerned. MP4 formats into 3GP
format development basis. Like MP4 3GP format is a container format.
The
video format used is usually in the form of MPEG-4, but the audio
format that is used can vary. AMR (which is also used as a ringtone
format) and AAC (commonly found in the iPod portable music player) are
two formats that are often used.
Because it is based on
a standard MP4 3GP, video player on your computer that can read MPEG-4
files generally also can play 3GP videos.
